About the City of Sheffield

Sheffield is officially England’s greenest city containing over 150 woodlands and 50 public parks.

Still world famous for, among other things, the invention Stainless Steel and the Crucible, Sheffield (the name originating from the River Sheaf) has grown to become a thriving cultural metropolis with a population of over half a million people.

About a third of the city lies within the Peak District making it the only major English city to have a National Park within its boundaries.

A settlement existed on the site of Sheffield as far back as the Ice Age but the city has its roots in a Danish and Anglo-Saxon settlement from towards the end of the 1st Millennium (Dore village is mentioned in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle).

Sheffield Castle was built after the Norman Conquest to control the small local settlements and this developed into a small town.

Sheffield was finally granted a City Charter in 1893 after it had seen it's population grow rapidly through the Industrial Revolution.

Ecclesall

Ecclesall Ward includes the districts of Bents Green, Ecclesall, Greystones, Millhouses and Ringinglow and is located in the South-West area of Sheffield.

About half of Ecclesall Ward is made up of parkland, woodland or rural areas including a large percentage of the 1.35km2 ancient Ecclesall Wood.

The name Ecclesall (from 'Heeksel-Hallr' meaning the witches' hill) is first mentioned in around 1250ad when Sir Ralphus De Ecclesall (a knight of the realm) settled in the area.
